What makes this trip genuinely different
Port Stephens, roughly two and a half hours north of Sydney, pairs two things you won't find together anywhere else covered on this site: a resident wild dolphin population reliably visible on boat cruises, and the Stockton Bight sand dunes — a genuine, sprawling desert-like dune system stretching along the coast, unlike anything else within reach of the city.

- Sandboard or quad-bike the Stockton sand dunes, one of the largest moving sand dune systems in the Southern Hemisphere — a genuinely unusual, fun activity that looks nothing like the rest of the NSW coastline.
- Swim or relax at Nelson Bay, the area's main town, with calm, sheltered beaches well suited to families.
- Try local oysters, with Port Stephens a genuine local seafood-growing region in its own right, distinct from Sydney's own seafood scene.
Day trip or overnight?
Given the distance, this sits closer to Jervis Bay than the closer options on this site — technically possible as a very long single day, but genuinely better suited to an overnight stay if you want to properly fit in both the dolphin cruise and the sand dunes without rushing either.
Getting there
No practical train option covers this trip — a car (self-driven or organised tour) is essential, with the drive itself taking around two and a half hours each way via the Pacific Motorway.
