If you remember the Powerhouse Museum as the huge science-and-design museum near Darling Harbour, the most important thing to know is simple: that old visitor advice is currently out of date.
Powerhouse Ultimo is closed for heritage revitalisation. The major new Powerhouse Parramatta opens Saturday 7 November 2026. Until then, the Powerhouse group still operates public experiences at Castle Hill and Sydney Observatory, but there is no normal walk-in Powerhouse Museum visit at Ultimo.
Do not travel to Ultimo expecting the old museum
As at 29 August 2026, Powerhouse Ultimo is temporarily closed for a major $300 million revitalisation. If your trip is before 7 November 2026, plan another museum instead unless you specifically want a Castle Hill or Sydney Observatory program.
Powerhouse Parramatta opens 7 November 2026
The new Powerhouse Parramatta is the big story. The museum is being built on the Parramatta River and is the first state cultural institution of this scale in Western Sydney.
The official opening date is Saturday 7 November 2026.
Powerhouse says the opening program will include five major exhibitions, more than 3,000 objects, over 1,600 objects from the Powerhouse Collection, and dozens of new commissions.
Four of the five opening exhibitions are planned to be free, with one major ticketed exhibition and free access for visitors under 16 to that show.
If you are visiting Sydney from November 2026 onward, this should be treated as a completely new attraction rather than a relocated version of the old Ultimo experience.
What are the five opening exhibitions?
The announced opening program includes:
- Task Eternal;
- The Mall;
- Overflow;
- Es Devlin: The Turning;
- The Dark.
The themes span design, science, engineering, First Nations knowledge, contemporary commissions and large-scale cultural storytelling — much closer to the Powerhouse's broad applied-arts-and-sciences identity than to a single-theme science museum.
Should visitors make the trip to Parramatta?
Once open, probably yes — particularly if the exhibition program appeals to you.
Parramatta is no longer an obscure edge-of-city detour. It is a major western Sydney centre with rail, Metro-related development, restaurants, riverfront public space and heritage sites. The new museum is intended as a destination in its own right.

What happened to Powerhouse Ultimo?
Ultimo is undergoing a major heritage revitalisation. The old museum occupied a former power station and became known for an unusually broad collection spanning transport, technology, engineering, fashion, design, decorative arts and science.
That building is not currently operating as a normal public museum.
The redevelopment is intended to create expanded exhibition and learning spaces while retaining the site's industrial heritage. Until it reopens, old blog posts that tell you to “walk from Darling Harbour to the Powerhouse” should be ignored.
Powerhouse Castle Hill
Powerhouse Castle Hill is the collection storage and conservation site, but it also presents public exhibitions and programs. The current visitor information lists weekend opening.
This is not a direct substitute for the old Ultimo museum. It is more specialised and geographically less convenient for most short-stay international visitors.
Go if a specific program or collection display interests you. Do not choose it simply because “the Powerhouse is on my Sydney list”.
Sydney Observatory
Sydney Observatory is also part of the Powerhouse group and remains one of its most visitor-friendly central experiences. It is a historic observatory on Observatory Hill with astronomy programs and a strong harbour setting.
If you are in Sydney before Parramatta opens and want a Powerhouse-run experience that fits easily into central sightseeing, the Sydney Observatory is the obvious choice.
What should you visit before 7 November 2026 instead?
If your original plan was “a big indoor museum near the CBD”, choose according to interest:
Science and natural history: Australian Museum.
Art: Art Gallery of NSW.
Contemporary art: Museum of Contemporary Art.
Astronomy and heritage: Sydney Observatory.
This is better than wasting time reaching a closed Ultimo site because an old travel article has not been updated.
What will make Parramatta different?
The new museum is much larger in ambition than a conventional relocation. Powerhouse describes a roughly 30,000-square-metre cultural project with large exhibition volumes, education facilities and a program designed around both the Powerhouse collection and new commissions.
The opening collection mix is also important. More than half a million objects sit within the wider Powerhouse collection, and the new building is intended to allow much larger objects and installations to be displayed at scale.
Families
The opening program has been designed with family and learning spaces in mind, and most opening exhibitions will be free. That could make Powerhouse Parramatta one of the strongest value family attractions in Western Sydney once it opens.
But opening weeks are likely to be busy. If you are travelling in November or December 2026, check booking arrangements and capacity information rather than assuming you can arrive spontaneously.
Getting to Parramatta
Parramatta is well connected by public transport from central Sydney. Train travel remains the straightforward option for many visitors, with buses, ferries and local connections depending on your starting point.
The museum sits by the Parramatta River, so it can be combined with the riverfront, historic Parramatta and food options rather than treated as an isolated suburban museum trip.

Common mistakes
Following pre-redevelopment Ultimo advice. The museum is closed.
Assuming Parramatta is already open. The confirmed opening date is 7 November 2026.
Treating Castle Hill as a like-for-like replacement. It is a different kind of visit.
Ignoring Sydney Observatory. It remains the easiest central Powerhouse experience while Ultimo is closed.
Planning a 2027 trip using 2026 opening-week information. Once Parramatta is operating, opening hours, tickets and exhibition details will settle and should be rechecked.
Bottom line
In late August 2026, “visit the Powerhouse Museum” is not a single useful instruction. Ultimo is closed, Parramatta is about to open, Castle Hill is a specialist weekend option, and Sydney Observatory remains active.
If you are arriving before 7 November, choose another major museum unless a specific Powerhouse program interests you. If you are arriving after 7 November, Powerhouse Parramatta deserves serious consideration and will need a fresh review once the first real visitor experience is established.
