Why this one's different from every other page in this section
Every other destination in our day trips section is reachable there and back within a single day. Lord Howe Island isn't, and we're including it here anyway, with a clear caveat: it's a roughly two-hour flight from Sydney, genuinely spectacular, and worth knowing about for anyone with a longer trip who wants something well beyond a standard day excursion.
✈️ Set expectations correctly
This requires a minimum of two to three nights to be worthwhile once you account for flight scheduling, and accommodation is limited by a strict visitor cap that keeps the island genuinely unspoiled — book well ahead, as availability sells out, especially in peak season.
What makes it worth the detour from a standard Sydney trip
Lord Howe Island is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed island with no traffic lights, a strictly limited number of visitors permitted at any time, and some of the best-preserved subtropical scenery in the Pacific — genuinely excellent snorkelling and diving on the world's southernmost coral reef, dramatic volcanic peaks, and a level of untouched natural beauty that a standard Sydney city trip simply doesn't offer.
What to actually do there
- Snorkel or dive at Ned's Beach, where fish swim close enough to hand-feed in shallow, clear water — a genuinely memorable, low-effort wildlife encounter.
- Climb Mount Gower, a serious, guided full-day hike for fit, experienced walkers, rewarded with sweeping views over the entire island.
- Cycle the island's flat, quiet roads — the easiest and most popular way to get around, with bike hire widely available.
Is it worth adding to your Sydney trip?
If your trip to Australia allows for more than a standard week in Sydney, and genuine untouched nature is a priority, yes — this delivers something no destination within day-trip range of Sydney can match. For a short, city-focused visit, it's not a realistic addition, and our closer day trips will serve a standard Sydney itinerary better.

Direct flights run from Sydney, taking around two hours — no other transport option is practical, and flight frequency is limited, so book well ahead of a planned visit.
