A genuinely major Greek community
Sydney is home to one of the largest Greek communities outside Greece itself, a legacy of significant post-war migration — and while Marrickville is a strong starting point (see our neighbourhood guide), the Greek food scene extends well beyond it, particularly through the southern suburbs around Kogarah, Rockdale, and Brighton-Le-Sands.
What to actually order
- Souvlaki done properly — grilled meat, fresh pita, and a genuine tzatziki, worlds apart from a rushed food-court version.
- A proper Greek coffee, distinct from the flat white culture covered in our coffee guide — brewed differently and worth trying specifically at an established Greek café.
- Fresh baklava and other Greek sweets from a dedicated Greek bakery, considerably better than a supermarket version.
- A full mezze-style spread at a proper Greek taverna, sharing several dishes across the table rather than ordering individual mains.

The annual Greek Festival of Sydney, held in the city, brings together the community's food, music, and culture in one concentrated event — worth checking current dates if your visit could align with it, as it's a genuinely good single-stop introduction to the scene.
Where the scene is strongest
Beyond Marrickville, the suburbs around Kogarah and Brighton-Le-Sands (sometimes informally called Sydney's "Little Greece" in that pocket of the south) hold a strong concentration of Greek restaurants, cafés, and grocers, reflecting decades of community presence in that part of the city.
A general approach
If your time is limited to one Greek food stop, Marrickville's overlap with the Vietnamese food scene makes it the most convenient single destination; if you have more time and want a deeper, more concentrated Greek food experience specifically, the southern suburbs reward the extra trip.
Getting there
Marrickville is easily reached by train (see our neighbourhood guide); the southern Greek community suburbs are best reached via the T4 line toward Kogarah or Rockdale, around 25–30 minutes from Central Station.
