Why it's worth the (longer) trip
Palm Beach sits at the very northern tip of Sydney's Northern Beaches, roughly 90 minutes from the CBD by public transport — further than most day-trip beaches on this site, but genuinely worth it for the combination of a beautiful beach, a working lighthouse, and a dramatically different, wealthier, more laid-back atmosphere than the city beaches closer to town. It's also instantly recognisable to anyone who's seen the long-running Australian TV drama filmed here.
The walk everyone comes for
The walk up to Barrenjoey Head lighthouse, at the peninsula's northern tip, is the single best reason to make the trip — a moderate uphill walk of around 40 minutes return, rewarded with sweeping views over both the ocean side and Pittwater, the calm estuary on the other side of the peninsula.
⛴️ Local tip
Take the ferry across Pittwater from Palm Beach Wharf to The Basin or Mackerel Beach for a genuinely different, boat-access-only side of the trip — both are part of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and feel a world away from the beach car park you started at.
What else to do
- Swim at Palm Beach itself, patrolled and genuinely excellent, with noticeably fewer crowds than Bondi or Manly given the distance from the city.
- Have lunch at Palm Beach's small café strip, unpretentious despite the area's wealthy reputation.
- Cross to Pittwater's western shore by ferry for bushwalking in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, largely untouched and a genuine contrast to the beach side.
Is it worth the distance?
If you have a full day free and have already done a closer beach (Bondi or Manly), Palm Beach delivers a meaningfully different experience worth the extra travel time. If your schedule is tight, Manly offers a similarly good lighthouse-adjacent walk (see our Manly guide) with a much shorter trip.
Getting there
Buses run from the city and from Manly, though the trip can take well over an hour depending on the route and traffic — check current timetables, as this is one of the longer public transport day trips covered on this site.
