Leichhardt: Sydney's Little Italy

Why Norton Street in Leichhardt is the destination for Italian food in Sydney, and what to actually order.

Sydney's real Italian food strip

Leichhardt, in the Inner West, has been Sydney's centre of Italian-Australian food and culture since post-war migration established a strong Italian community here — Norton Street, the main strip, remains the destination for genuinely good, family-run Italian restaurants, delis, and pasticcerias rather than a tourist-facing imitation of the idea.

What to actually order

  • A proper espresso or cannoli from one of the older pasticcerias along Norton Street, several run by the same families for multiple generations.
  • Handmade pasta, the genuine strength of the strip — look for restaurants that make pasta fresh in-house rather than relying on dried, imported alternatives.
  • Gelato, with several genuinely excellent Italian-run gelaterias on Norton Street offering a noticeably more traditional style than some of the newer, more experimental Inner West gelato spots.

🍝 Local tip

The Norton Street Italian Festa, an annual street festival celebrating the area's Italian heritage, is worth timing a visit around if your dates line up — check current dates closer to your trip, as they shift year to year.

Beyond the restaurants

Leichhardt's Italian grocers and delis are worth a browse even if you're not cooking — genuinely good imported and locally made Italian products, from cured meats to fresh pasta to hard-to-find ingredients, sold by people who know their stock well.

How it compares to the CBD's Italian restaurants

CBD Italian restaurants often lean upmarket and polished; Leichhardt leans toward genuine, unpretentious family cooking at generally lower prices — the better choice if authenticity and value matter more to you than a fine-dining setting.

Getting there

Leichhardt has no train station; regular buses run from the CBD (around 20–25 minutes), or it's an easy addition to a day exploring the wider Inner West alongside Newtown and Balmain.
