The heritage pub scene
Sydney's older pubs — many dating to the 1800s, particularly around The Rocks — are worth a visit for atmosphere alone, with sandstone walls and heritage features that predate the rest of the city growing up around them. They're not typically where the best beer is, but they're genuinely worth a drink for the setting, especially somewhere like The Rocks or Millers Point.
The craft beer boom
The more interesting drinking, beer-wise, has shifted to Sydney's growing craft brewery scene, concentrated particularly in the inner west and southern suburbs — Marrickville, Alexandria, and Botany all have working breweries with attached taprooms, several converted from old industrial warehouses. Expect a far more casual, often family- and dog-friendly atmosphere than the heritage pubs, with rotating taps and genuinely experimental beers alongside reliable staples.
🍺 A quick vocabulary guide
A "schooner" (425ml) is the standard pub order in NSW — ask for a "pot" (285ml) if you want something smaller, or a "pint" (570ml) if you want more. Ordering a "beer" without specifying a size will usually get you a schooner by default.
What to actually order
Local breweries tend to do particularly well with pale ales and lagers suited to Sydney's warm climate — look for anything from well-regarded local names, which show up on tap lists at good bottle shops and pubs across the city, not just their own taprooms.
Pub etiquette worth knowing
- There's no table service in most pubs — order and pay at the bar, and your drink is brought to you or you carry it yourself.

Getting there
Heritage pubs cluster around The Rocks and Circular Quay; the craft brewery scene is more spread out, with Marrickville (Inner West) and Botany (south of the airport) both worth a dedicated afternoon if beer is a real priority for your trip.
