Beyond Manly
Manly gets most of the attention because it's the easiest Northern Beaches suburb to reach — a direct ferry from Circular Quay. But Manly is just the southern tip of a much longer run of beach suburbs stretching north, each with its own character and, generally, fewer visitors than Manly itself. If you have a car or don't mind a longer bus trip, this stretch rewards it.
Dee Why
The first proper beach north of Manly with its own real town centre, Dee Why has a genuinely good, unpretentious café and restaurant strip a block back from the sand, and a beach that's popular with local surfers without being a serious tourist draw. It's a good stop if you want a real Northern Beaches feel without a long drive.
Collaroy and Narrabeen
These two run into each other along one of the longest unbroken stretches of sand in the Sydney area — Collaroy's beach is wide and popular with families, while Narrabeen adds a genuinely large tidal lagoon on its inland side, popular for stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking in calmer water than the open ocean.
🏄 Local tip
Narrabeen Lagoon has a long, flat, largely traffic-free path circling the whole lagoon — a genuinely good option for an easy bike ride or walk that most visitors to the Northern Beaches never discover, since it sits just inland from the beach itself.
Mona Vale and beyond
Mona Vale marks a noticeable shift toward a quieter, more affluent, more residential stretch of coast, with Palm Beach — covered separately in our day trips section — another 20 minutes further north again. Mona Vale's own beach is genuinely good and considerably less crowded than anything closer to the city.
How to actually do this as a day out
Rather than picking one suburb, the Northern Beaches reward a loose, beach-hopping approach — start at Dee Why or Collaroy, work your way north, and stop wherever the beach or the café strip looks appealing that day. A car makes this considerably easier than public transport, though buses do connect the whole stretch if you're patient.
Getting there
Buses run from Manly and from the CBD (via the Northern Beaches B-Line rapid bus service) up through Dee Why, Collaroy, Narrabeen, and Mona Vale — there's no train line serving this stretch of coast, making a car the more flexible option if you want to cover more than one or two suburbs in a day.
