Why it's worth the trip west
Lakemba, in Sydney's south-west, is home to one of the city's largest Lebanese and broader Middle Eastern communities, and Haldon Street, the main strip, delivers some of the most genuinely excellent, affordable Middle Eastern and South Asian food anywhere in Sydney — well beyond what most CBD restaurants offer at several times the price.
What to actually order
- Fresh-baked Lebanese bread and manakish (a flatbread topped with za'atar, cheese, or meat) from one of the strip's bakeries, best eaten hot, straight from the oven.
- Charcoal chicken, a genuine Western Sydney institution, served with garlic sauce and pickles — simple, and done extremely well here.
- Mixed grill plates, combining kebabs, kofta, and grilled meats, generally excellent value compared to CBD equivalents.
- Baklava and other Middle Eastern sweets from the strip's dedicated dessert shops, worth trying alongside a proper Lebanese coffee.

Haldon Street hosts a famous Ramadan night food festival, when the strip transforms into a bustling night market for the entire holy month — one of the best food events in Sydney if your visit lines up with it (dates shift yearly with the Islamic calendar, so check current timing before planning around it).

Lakemba's food scene extends well beyond Lebanese cuisine, with genuinely good South Asian, Turkish, and broader Middle Eastern options along the same strip — reflecting the area's wider multicultural community rather than a single cuisine.

This is a genuine, unpolished local food strip rather than a tourist-oriented precinct — expect simple, functional shopfronts rather than styled interiors, and be ready to order at a counter rather than expect full table service at most spots. The food is the entire point here.
Getting there
Lakemba station sits directly on Haldon Street, on the East Hills line from Central Station — around a 30-minute direct train ride, one of the more straightforward Western Sydney food trips to reach.
